District land office Receivers were responsible for all financial transactions relating to the sale of public lands. They issued receipts when land was purchased and when payments were made. Receivers' registers of receipts contain records of receipts issued by the Receiver. The registers may vary over time, though generally they include the following information: date, number of receipt, name, residence, location of the tract, number of acres, price per acre, and amount of purchase money. Some volumes also indicate the amount received in forfeited land stock and military land script. Usually the information was recorded on printed forms. These records document the business aspects of public land sales, the work of the Receiver of Public Monies and provide information on purchasers. The 1820-1842 volume also includes a register of receipts issued for Cherokee Indian School lands. The 1821-1835 volume has receipts pasted in the front and back of the volume and includes a list of forfeited land stock.
